One of the very first portions of scripture I memorised was Psalm 91.
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
The King James called the shelter the ‘secret place’.
I was captivated by the ‘secret place’. God knew I needed one, desperately needed one. I still do.
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I must have rehearsed this psalm a multitude of times every day for years. It has been imprinted in such a way that I live out of this place a good portion of the time now.
I will say to the LORD, "My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!" For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper and from the deadly pestilence.
For so long there was nowhere to run and there was no safe place to hide. It became my refuge and my fortress. It became a place where I could learn to trust again.
He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you may seek refuge, his faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.
It was a place where his faithfulness became my shield. Even when I had to wait a very long time. His faithfulness protects me and gives me hope.
You will not be afraid of the terror by night, or of the arrow that flies by day; of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or of the destruction that lays waste at noon. A thousand may fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not approach you. You will only look on with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked.
Never underestimate the power of God and never overestimate evil. That’s not easy for me to say, but I am saying it.
Psalm 91 is full of drama. It fits the bill as I continue to walk out my salvation with fear and trembling. A good kind of fear to replace the terror and a trembling that is set off by awe.
Now over time this secret place found expression in an external place, In the vast immensity of the ocean. What a progression. I watched my inner world find expression that was virtually impossible at one point in the real world. I am beginning to interpret everything internal in the safety of the ocean. What a paradox. The ocean is anything but safe but the overwhelming sense I have of a world spun out of control is met here by a God in which even the wind and the waves obey.
Here is an entry from an earlier journal :
every day brings me one step closer to your immensity, your majesty. for it is here that i lose myself in your wild and crazy love of me. you have captured me in a frenzy of sheer passionate delight through your playfulness and the power of ocean waves washing over me. and it is here that i come and i stand before you captivated by your glory.
we have been meeting like this for years now and i cannot imagine a day without my secret place. i have whispered a prayer that goes like this, ' please, let me grow old here for this is where i belong.'
I have written this psalm out below in its entirety.
If you have a secret place, please share about it here.
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the LORD, "My refuge and my fortress,
My God, in whom I trust!"
For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper
And from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with His pinions,
And under His wings you may seek refuge;
His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.
You will not be afraid of the terror by night,
Or of the arrow that flies by day;
Of the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
Or of the destruction that lays waste at noon.
A thousand may fall at your side
And ten thousand at your right hand,
But it shall not approach you.
You will only look on with your eyes
And see the recompense of the wicked.
For you have made the LORD, my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place.
No evil will befall you,
Nor will any plague come near your tent.
For He will give His angels charge concerning you,
To guard you in all your ways.
They will bear you up in their hands,
That you do not strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread upon the lion and cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you will trample down.
"Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name.
"He will call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
"With a long life I will satisfy him
And let him see My salvation."
We'd love to hear from you.
