competition

We open Competition, Fractal of Two with this verse from 1 Kings 12:6-8

Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked.

They replied, “If today you will be a servant to these people and serve them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants.”

But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him.

Here we see another faucet of the challenge regarding council. This council cost the King a big part of his kingdom. We too are routinely challenged with conflicting council. Individuals have different opinions that they are all too willing to share.

Often we fall into the same trap Rehoboam fell into by contributing wisdom to what is really relationship. There were older men who walked with his father who had wisdom based on experience rather than these young pups that the King grew up with and that he knew personally. In the end he chose to embrace the wisdom of those he was in relationship with. This is a pernicious problem that relationships gives credibility to the words of people. We see this not just on an individual basis but the culture as a whole.

Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Romans 12:2 MSG

It takes some work to be changed from the inside out. It takes some work to unpack the council God has given us. It takes little work to fit into the culture easily and to receive what is readily available while being enmeshed in relationship.

prayer for competition

I bless you today spirit. I bless you adrenal and kidneys with being able to hear the council of God in spite of the culture. I bless you with slowing down enough that you find the time to discover and unpack what god has placed within you.

I bless you with not being seduced by the loud cries of legitimacy that the cultural advice brings. I bless you with being brave and courageous in turning away from the advice of even successful people until you first listen to the complete package of the council God placed in you.

I bless you to be able to hear the council of God in spite of the culture.
