Among the Gum Trees with Ruthie
I am Mercy, slow to move, but longing to connect heart to heart with others.
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF?
My husband Billy Joe and I came to Jesus during the crazy Jesus Movement of the ‘70’s and are still in active ministry. That should be a hint to my age, but really I find the number of my age is irrelevant. The Lord has taken me on quite an adventure. In my life I have been a Registered nurse, worship leader (guitar), pastor’s wife, counselor, home school mom, midwife, minister, teacher in the body of Christ and now I find myself as a writer, speaker and passionate grandmother to 11 above average grandchildren. But aren’t they all above average!? Life is good!
My favorite thing to do is teach workshops on the redemptive gifts. It brings such joy to see the “lights come on” as others discover their design and identity. In one recent group an RG servant declared, “I have discovered that I am not just a chair mover. I move chairs and set the atmosphere for the King! It doesn’t get much better than that!” I love it!
The other passion of my heart is the Land of Israel. We are closely connected with Jewish believers who serve with the Messianic church in Jerusalem. We have made quite a few trips there and even take small groups to learn and discover more of our Jewish roots as Believers.
HOW DID YOU INITIALLY CONNECT WITH SLG?
We had heard about “motivational gifts” from Bill Gothard in the 70’s and 80’s, but Arthur brought such revelation to this teaching, I usually say it’s like motivational gifts on steroids, off the charts!
In the mid-nineties we had begun traveling in our state of Mississippi praying for racial reconciliation and healing of the land when a friend, David Arnold, put Arthur’s “Redemptive Gifts of Cities” into our hands. We began to listen to his teaching and chose to drive to San Antonio, Texas, 22 hours away, to hear him in person. It was at this meeting during a break that I had an encounter with the Lord and Arthur. My life shifted forever. I was launched on a new adventure discovering who I am as a Mercy, which I recount in the introduction of my book. From there we have tracked with Arthur through his teaching and he has been a wise counselor to us over the years.
DO YOU KNOW YOUR REDEMPTIVE GIFT AND IF SO CAN YOU GIVE US A GLIMPSE OF HOW THAT PLAYS OUT ON ANY GIVEN DAY?
I am Mercy, slow to move, but longing to connect heart to heart with others. Worship is my language. It seems in this season of my life many younger women are drawn to talk with me, asking me to mentor them which includes mostly listening, counseling, hopefully guiding them. Of course, the first thing I do in these relationships is to help then discover their RG. I love being available, but have to pull back because of over-commitment. Having a RG Ruler husband, who can say ‘no’ quite easily, helps me because as a mercy, my answer is usually a quick ‘yes!’ He is there encouraging my time alone to realign, rest and ponder. Then I’m ready to go again.
CHOOSE A TEACHING THAT HAS MADE AN IMPACT IN YOUR LIFE AND TELL US HOW?
Of course the teaching on Redemptive Gifts has had the largest impact. I live it, breathe it, teach it, analyze others to figure out their gift regardless of when or where the encounter. It is just a part of who I am daily.
However, another portion of my life with the Lord is the teaching of the Kinsman Redeemer and his covenant with us. In fact that is my next book which I am hoping to publish soon. The Covenant Keeper.
THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT ONRAMPS TO GOD. WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR KEYS OF MUSIC FOR INTIMACY AND HOW DO YOU MOST READILY CONNECT?
MUSIC. Worship music, playing my guitar or piano, singing. Many times, when I cannot seem to ‘touch’ Him I put my earphones in and sit for an hour playing youTube videos of worship. One of my favorites is “Creation Calls: Are you Listening?” And right now, “Chain Breaker” by Zach Williams and “Move, Keep Walkin” by Toby Mac. Both address those times when you just don’t see the Lord answering prayer the way you think he should.
It just seems when I really need to hear an answer, I hear a song in my head and a I know he’s talking to me. Even Willie Nelson’s “You Were Always on my Mind.” Guess you would say music is our language.
I LOVE TO DISCOVER A BIGGER VIEW OF GOD. CAN YOU SHARE A GOD-SIGHTING OR STORY TO HELP US ALL DO THAT?
As a mercy I am a seer. As a child I was a daydreamer and could ‘go places’ in my head or imagination. As a young mother of four there was very little quiet time in our home. But nap time was mandatory because that was when I would meet with the Lord. I found a place in my imagination where I could block out the responsibilities and noise and just ‘be.’ It was a beautiful pool surrounded by huge rocks and a small waterfall. I met with the lover of my soul there and most of the time I didn’t need words, we just sat together. Other times I carried my cares or people there and he had a big basket waiting where I would place the people or problems into this basket and knew he would take care of them. Several years later I moved on to another place in my imagination to meet Him and that was the end of that… Until I traveled to the land of Israel. As I walked up to the pools of Engedi I was stunned. I knew every rock, every tree, every curve in the pool. This place was real! As I walked up the mountain to the upper pool where I was alone, His presence met me there yet again. What a joy to be in “Our special place” once again. Oh My! What a beloved redeemer and supernatural God he is!
WE ARE ALL ON A JOURNEY. CAN YOU SHARE A STRUGGLE YOU HAVE/HAD AND TOOLS OR TIPS OF HOW YOU ARE MOVING FORWARD?
Yes, several years ago Megan did a phone conference for just Mercy gifts. I think as she was preparing to release the CD series “Where the Living Treasures Lie.” By the way, this is a “must listen” for mercies. During these calls she spoke about time travel. Almost all of the people on the call affirmed that this was indeed an area of difficulty for them. At the time I assumed it was a mercy thing. However, in counseling and listening, I’ve discovered it is a common tool of the enemy to paralyze us to hold us back.
It could involve a trauma bond to time, but for me it could be as simple as a conversation with a friend where I stated something that was not received well or a comment I should not have made. In the scheme of life, not really a big deal, but the enemy would use it to distract me, cause guilt and steal my time and peace as I would ‘revisit’ it over and over, asking questions of “What if?” And “If Only!” And as mercies know, we tend to default to guilt.
Megan’s solution was to go back to the incident and ask the Lord if there needs to be repentance or forgiveness for this incident and take care of it spiritually. Then leave it in the past. When the enemy jerks you back there, as he will, simply say to yourself out loud: “No, I have taken care of that, no more guilt!” At that point she suggested you open your eyes and focus on something you can see with your eyes, such as the color of a lamp or a tree. Just look for a specific item to focus on that is tangible and in the room with you. Begin to talk to yourself, even out loud if necessary, to pull yourself back to the present. This has become a great tool for me to use against the enemy of my soul.
IS THERE SOMETHING YOU WOULD LIKE PRAYER FOR OR TO BE BLESSED IN?
I am in the process of publishing a new book on covenant called The Covenant Keeper. I would love for you to release blessings on the finishing and publishing of this book.
Thank you for taking time to get to know me!
